The continued protection of our world’s marine environments is a cause SalvOcean is firmly committed to. The threat posed by these wrecks is too big to ignore, especially as deterioration accelerates and the risk of significant oil release in turn becomes more likely. Because there is currently no regular monitoring of these potentially hazardous wrecks, we believe our services can be of great benefit to all government and controlling authorities with jurisdiction over the regions we operate within.
The great majority of the 7800 ships sunk during World War 2 are now known to be ‘slicking time bombs’. Still present in these wrecks are millions of cubic meters of unspent heavy fuel oils, munitions and hazardous noxious substances (HNS). As these wrecks decay, the containment of these materials becomes ever weaker.
We are now entering the ‘danger period’ where these wrecks will start to leak their fuel oils and other HNS substances into the oceans
Most of these wrecks are not monitored as to their current status and the threat they pose to the environment.
We are currently working with the Republic of Ireland Coast Guard Authorities to provide shipwreck data identifying potential risks to the environment.
We use the latest technology to accurately measure the levels of fuel oils still present within shipwrecks together with assessing the containment tanks integrity; this provides for risk assessments to be devised
We provide all findings to authorities so as to record and where necessary take proactive measures to prevent environmental disasters.
SalvOcean offers its expertise on a consultancy basis and can also provide;
- Multi Beam Echo Sound (MBES) modelling of shipwrecks
- Bathymetry seabed mapping
- High-definition photogrammetry modelling of shipwrecks
- Real Time Imagine SONAR (RTIS) hydrocarbons leak detection.
- Conductivity, Temperature & Depth (CTD) analysis of sea water columns
- Neutron Backscatter detection of remaining fuel oils and HNS liquid cargoes
- Cathodic Protection (CP) analysis of hull and containment materials
- Any other relevant data that will help determine present and future risks of release into the environment.
- All data compiled into bespoke survey reports, along with environmental risk assessment of each individual shipwreck.
